On April 1st, I had the honor of speaking at AAF Greater Rochester’s professional development series—a beautifully intimate gathering held at Magic Spell Studios on the RIT campus.
The session was titled “Brand or Be Branded: How to Make Your Name Work for You,” but what unfolded went far beyond slides and soundbites. From the opening moments, it became clear we weren’t just there to learn—we were there to unpack, to reflect, to reframe. And the response?
It was immediate. Honest. Reflective.
In my DMs. In the comments. In the eyes of the folks still sitting quietly after the room emptied.
People didn’t just hear the talk—they felt it.
They felt the invitation to take themselves seriously.
To stop shrinking.
To consider not just what they’ve done—but who they are in a world that keeps asking them to shapeshift.
That’s what I’m still holding today.
Taxicab Confessions
Before I even arrived on campus, I found myself in a moment of alignment I couldn’t have scripted.
My rideshare driver, a warm and deeply thoughtful man, shared with me—completely unprompted—that he was a retired marketer. An RIT grad who had once built his own agency. Today, he mentors young men preparing for the trades, helping them understand branding, presentation, and the value of who they are. He even showed me a printed deck, proudly kept in a presentation portfolio.
He had no idea what I did.
That’s when I knew the day was going to be different.

AAF Greater Rochester—You Did That
I want to thank Kristin Balliet and the entire AAF Greater Rochester team for the care and intention behind this gathering. You created a room that was inclusive, intellectually open, and full of possibility. That’s not easy—and you made it look effortless.
We didn’t just talk about personal branding. We unpacked what it means to live it—especially in a world where layoffs, pivots, and algorithms are rewriting the rules.
We covered a lot, but two things stuck:
- The power of deep networking—not the performative kind, but the kind rooted in shared values and generosity.
- The reality of job hunting while building your personal brand—and how exhausting, exposing, and necessary that can be.
This was more than a session. It was a reset.
Who Would You Be If It All Fell Away?
This isn’t a rhetorical question.
Because the truth is—titles change. Algorithms change. Entire industries shift.
But if you’ve done the work to define your personal brand, to anchor yourself in something deeper—then you’re never really starting over. You’re just repositioning what’s already yours.
That’s exactly why I created The Personal Brand Blueprint. Not for vanity, but for clarity.
It’s a structured, practical tool that helps you align your story, values, and visibility—especially when the ground beneath you is moving.
For Those Who Were in the Room (and Those Who Couldn’t Make It)
Whether you were seated in the studio or catching the energy through LinkedIn, here’s what I want you to carry forward:
5 Strategies to Build Your Brand (Even While Job Hunting)
- Reframe Networking as a Value-Add Practice
As Victoria Chynoweth wrote: “Networking isn’t a skill—it’s your most valuable business strategy to stay relevant.”
Build genuine, reciprocal relationships rooted in curiosity and generosity. - Use Your Brand as a Compass
Your resume tells us what you’ve done. Your brand tells us who you are.
If you need help clarifying your message and strengths, start with The Blueprint. - Stay Consistent, Not Constant
You don’t need to be online every day. You just need alignment.
Each post, each interaction, each conversation should reflect the same core identity. - Give Before You Ask
Want a warm lead? Start with a warm offer. Share a resource. Lift someone else up.
That generosity builds long-term credibility and trust. - Be Searchable AND Memorable
Branding increases your visibility and magnetism. It’s how people remember you when opportunities arise.
If You Are Ready to Go to the Next Level
If this resonated and you want to continue the work, I created The Ascent for that next layer:
A space for clarity, emotional trust, and brand growth.
Whether you’re job hunting, pivoting, or finally giving voice to who you’ve always been—this space was built for you.
My Final Thoughts
As I departed and headed toward my next adventure, I carried the people in that room with me. Every nod, every question, every moment of quiet reflection—you stayed with me.
This wasn’t just about how to get noticed.
It was about how to stay rooted.
If you’re ready to take the next step, you can start with The Personal Brand Blueprint—a tool for aligning your message, voice, and value.
Or, if you’re craving something deeper (and fun) The Ascent was built to help you sustain that momentum.
You are capable of big things.
